Description
The St. John’s Wort is a European shrub of the Hypericaceae family, being the most abundant species of this family. Its name comes from the property that was attributed to this herb of droving away evil spirits and apparitions. Its flowers used to be hung on religious icons on St. John’s day.
The active part of this shrub are the flowering tops, which contain naftodiantrones mainly hypericin, pseudohypericin and isohypericin, being the first the most active one, and the one used to standardize the product. It also contains flavonoids, biflavones, caffeic acid derivates, proantocyanidols, phytosterols, hyperforin and coumarins, among others.
Properties
St. John’s Wort has been traditionally used to improve:
Symptoms associated with psychosomatic disturbances.
Moderate and mild depressive disorders, anxiety and nervous fatigue.
Main indications
Anxiety.
Depression.
Night terrors.
Neurovegetative climacteric disorders.
Directions
1 or 2 capsules daily, with a glass of water.
Warnings
Preparations based on St. John’s Wort should not be taken along with drugs without medical supervision as this grass modifies various drug-metabolizing enzymes.
It can cause photosensitivity in some people. In these cases it is recommended not expose oneself to direct sunlight.
